In 2012, the Michigan legislature introduced modifications to their community college appropriations bill to make transferring core courses from Michigan community colleges to four-year institutions in Michigan easier. This was achieved by revising and renaming the existing MACRAO agreement to the Michigan Transfer Agreement.

The Michigan Transfer Agreement Requirements

In order to fulfill the Michigan Transfer Agreement, students must acquire 30 credits from a certified community college in Michigan and obtain at least a 2.0 GPA for every single course. To ensure compliance with these distribution requirements, please make sure the following criteria are met:

  • 1 course in English Composition
  • A second course in English Composition or 1 course in Communications
  • 1 course in Mathematics from one of three pathways: Pathway to Calculus (includes College Algebra), Statistics or Quantitative Reasoning
  • 2 courses in Social Sciences (from two disciplines)
  • 2 courses in Humanities and Fine Arts (from two disciplines excluding studio and performance classes)
  • 2 courses in Natural Sciences, including one with laboratory experience (from two disciplines)

If you are looking to attend a certain college or university, it is possible that they may require additional courses on top of the ones listed in this agreement. Therefore, if you want to know what these extra requirements might be for an individual institution, don’t hesitate to contact your college counselor or academic advisor directly.
