The University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, has been known for centuries as a premier academic institution. In the past decade, its degree of selectivity has risen rapidly; with an acceptance rate now only half of what it used to be. Unfortunately for those from out-of-state face even harsher competition. This article aims to give those applying for transfer an idea of the process.
UVA Transfer Acceptance Rate
In the fall of 2021, UVA accepted 36% of transfer applicants; in 2020, 40%; in 2019, 37%; in 2018, 37%; and in 2017, 40%.
It is important to note that in-state students have a higher chance of being admitted to UVA than out-of-state applicants. The acceptance rate for Virginia residents was 45% in 2022, but only 20% for non-residents. Nearly half of the 600 transfer students who enrolled started their college career at a community college in Virginia.
UVA Transfer Writing Supplement Overview
There are two prompts you will have to answer when applying to UVA:
- “The personal statement helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want admissions readers to know about you that is not reflected elsewhere in your application? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay using the prompt to inspire and structure your response (1,250 – 3,250 characters, approx. 250 – 650 words).”
- “Please provide a statement that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve (4,000 character max).”
UVA Transfer GPA
From what the university posts on its website, the average GPA for students transferring is 3.5. From our experience, though, candidates with a 3.7 or higher are in a much better spot. If you’re an out-of-state applicant, aim for an even higher GPA.
UVA Application Overview
According to UVA, they “tend to admit 35-40% of the transfer applicants who apply to start at UVA in the fall. Admission for the spring semester is more competitive. You may apply for the spring semester if you are interested in the College of Arts & Sciences. Typically, we receive over 300 applications for 35 spots in the College of Arts and Sciences.”
Additionally, UVA will “look equally at your high school record and your college work if you are applying as a second-year student. If you are applying as a third-year student, we look primarily at your college work.”
To be qualified for transfer admission to UVA, applicants must have finished a minimum of 24 college credit hours by the time they start classes at UVA. This excludes summer coursework, AP classes, and IB classes.
If you want to transfer to UVA, you must fill out either the Common Application or Coalition Application, as well as UVA’s supplementary questionnaire. Furthermore, they require official transcripts from your high school and any college or university you previously attended.
Transfer students have the option of submitting SAT or ACT scores. The school has yet to announce if it will require students to submit test scores in future application cycles.
It’s common for students to forget to submit the FAFSA. You must submit FAFSA and any other financial forms along with your application before the deadline.
The TOEFL or IELTS tests must be taken by individuals whose primary language is not English and who didn’t attend high school in an English-speaking environment.
UVA Transfer Deadline
The university offers a transfer option for both fall and spring. The UVA transfer deadline for fall applicants is March 1st. Spring applicants apply by October 1st. For those joining the university in the fall, UVA transfer decisions are made by May 1st. Spring hopefuls are notified of their status by November 30th.

The choice of whether to transfer to the University of Virginia hinges on a multitude of personal factors. These include, but are not limited to, your preferences, what you aspire to do professionally, and the field of study you wish to pursue.
Although there are many reasons to go to UVA, some stand out more than others. For example, the average first-year student retention rate is 97%. This means that those who enroll at UVA enjoy their experience and find the school offers everything they were looking for.
