While the University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1740, it only became the prestigious institution that it is known as today much later on. In fact, if we compare admission rates from different years, in the 1980’s Penn had an acceptance rate of over 40%! Compare this to the Class of 2027, who were just admitted a few days ago; they faced an acceptance rate below 5%.
UPenn 2023-2024 Transfer Acceptance Rate
For the 2023-2024 transfer cycle at the University of Pennsylvania (Upenn), received 3,885 applicants, and the university admitted 178 of them, resulting in a transfer acceptance rate of 4.6%.

The University of Pennsylvania transfer acceptance rate was abysmal this past year. Out of over 3,500 students who applied to the school, only 165 were accepted into the program. This transfer acceptance rate is lower than past years by almost 4%! Historically Penn’s transfer rate hovers around 8%, while this past year, it was 4.7%
UPenn Transfer Application Supplementals
Applying to transfer to UPenn is no easy feat. You will have to answer the following three essay prompts:
- Please explain your reasons for transferring from your current institution and what you hope to gain by transferring to another institution. (4,150 characters or fewer).
- How will you explore community at Penn? Consider how Penn will help shape your perspective and identity, and how your identity and perspective will help shape Penn. (1,020 characters or fewer).
- Considering the specific undergraduate school you have selected, describe how you intend to explore your academic and intellectual interests at the University of Pennsylvania. For students applying to specialized programs, please answer this questions in regard to your single-degree school choice; your interest in the specialized program may be addressed through the program-specific essay. (2,295 characters or fewer).
All applicants must apply to their school of choice. Internal transfers into other programs are not possible after applying for transfer admission. Keep in mind that Wharton School and School of Engineering only accept second-year students. However, the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Nursing accept sophomores or juniors.

UPenn Transfer Deadline and Decision Date
If you’re looking to transfer to UPenn, the only option is to apply for the fall semester. The deadline for applicants is March 15, and you will receive a decision by May 15.
UPenn Admissions Overview
Extracurricular activities are an important part of your application to Penn. It is essential to have some sort of “spike” that will make you stand out. According to the admissions office, “Penn looks for students with the ability to turn their ideas and interests into action, people whose talents and experiences will energize our community.”
According to the admissions team, the six most important factors in admissions decisions at the University of Pennsylvania are course rigor, GPA, standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), essays, recommendations, and character qualities. In addition, extracurricular activities, class rank, and the interview will still come into play. Note these factors are stated for high school applicants, but many still apply for transfer hopefuls.
Note that Penn’s policy of making standardized test scores optional will remain in place for the 2022-23 admissions cycle.
Although there is not a set GPA requisite to apply as a transfer at UPenn, prior students have needed a 3.8 or above to be seen as competitive for UPenn.
