University of Michigan 2021 Transfer Acceptance Rate
In the Fall of 2021, UMich received 4,942 applications and granted acceptance to 2,051 students, resulting in a transfer acceptance rate of 42%. Other years saw similar rates, with 2020 at 46%, 2019 at 42%, 2018 at 39%, and 2017 resting comfortably at 38%. These figures highlight that every year thousands of applicants have been successful in transferring to this esteemed university.
The University of Michigan’s admissions process heavily favors applicants residing in-state. Though they do not disclose the ratio between in-state and out-of-state transfers, statistics from the Class of 2026 indicate that first-year students accepted from within Michigan were twice as likely to be admitted than those living out of state.

For the 2022-2023 transfer cycle, the University of Michigan received a total of 5,633 applications and extended acceptance offers to 2,062 students. This resulted in a transfer acceptance rate of 36.61%.

Every prospective University of Michigan transfer student must complete the following four prompts.
- The personal statement helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want admissions readers to know about you that is not reflected elsewhere in your application? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay using the prompt to inspire and structure your response (1,250 – 3,250 characters, approx. 250 – 650 words).
- Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it. (1,500 characters or fewer)
- Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (2,750 characters or fewer)
- Please provide a statement that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve. (1,500 characters or fewer)
What GPA Do You Need for the University of Michigan?
Last year, the school stated that the average GPA for transfer students was 3.80. However, out-of-state applicants may have to attain an even higher GPA in order gain admission.
University of Michigan Transfer Deadline and Decision Date
The University of Michigan offers prospective transfer students two choices: fall and winter. Those applying for the fall must submit their application by February 1st. Applicants will be hearing back in Mid-March. For applicants hoping to join UMichigan during the winter term, they will have until October 1st to apply. Acceptance notifications will begin as early as November.
