What is Columbia Looking For?
Columbia strives to admit those students who will gain the most from attendance and, in turn, provide value back to the school and its community. In order to find these high-caliber individuals, Columbia looks at six areas above all else, including grades, extracurricular activities, character, context, fit, and letters of recommendation. Per Columbia, they “seek diversity of personalities, achievements and talents, and of economic, social, ethnic, cultural, religious, racial and geographic backgrounds.”
Furthermore, according to Columbia, students who have the best chance to gain admission have done the following:
- Achieved excellent grades in a minimum of 24 college credit hours.
- Students must complete some of the Core Curriculum in addition to their discipline-specific courses.
- Engineering applicants are encouraged to have completed two semesters each of Calculus and Physics, as well as one semester of Chemistry.
- Academic research that has been published, either by you alone or with a faculty member at your present institution.
- Excelling outside of the classroom: intercollegiate academic competitions, significant artistic achievements, building a business, earning a patent, or any other notable accomplishments.
Columbia takes a more in-depth and collaborative approach to admissions by requiring that every applicant be discussed and examined by more than one admissions officer – this is a committee-based approach.
What GPA Do You Need For Columbia?
Although the university claims that a GPA of 3.5 is sufficient, our experience tells us otherwise. To increase your chances of getting in, aim for a 3.8 or higher. Keep in mind that this number isn’t set in stone. Students with lower GPAs have been known to get into Columbia before, but increasing your odds can never hurt.
